How to use the Excel to JSON Converter
- Drop an .xlsx file onto the box, or click it to choose one.
- Pick the Sheet, or All sheets to get an object with one key per sheet.
- Untick First row is the header to get plain arrays instead of objects.
- Click Copy or Download .json, or Send to… another tool such as JSON to TypeScript.
What you get
[
{ "id": 1042, "customer": "Somchai P.", "paid": true, "date": "2026-10-24" },
{ "id": 1043, "customer": "Mia K.", "paid": false, "date": "2026-10-25" }
]
- Keys come from the first row. Empty headings become
column_3and repeated onesname_2, so no data is lost. - Values keep their type: numbers, booleans, text and dates (as ISO strings). Formulas give their last calculated value.
- Empty cells become
null, so every object has the same keys. - Hidden sheets are listed and marked as hidden.
What happens to your data
The file is read and written by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded, there's no size limit beyond your device's memory, and it works offline once the page has loaded. The converter reads and writes modern Excel files (.xlsx, Excel 2007 and later), which Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice also open. Old .xls files need to be saved as .xlsx first.
Frequently asked questions

Yes: in Google Sheets choose File → Download → Microsoft Excel (.xlsx), then drop the file here.
What about merged cells?
The value appears in the first cell of the merged area; the other cells are null.
Can it read .xls or .csv files?
Old .xls files need to be saved as .xlsx first. For CSV, use CSV to JSON.
