How to use the JSON to Excel Converter
- Paste JSON into the left box, open a .json file, or click Load sample.
- Check the preview: one row per item, one column per key.
- Choose how to handle nested objects, and whether each list gets its own sheet.
- Click Download .xlsx and open it in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.
How JSON becomes a spreadsheet
| JSON | In Excel |
|---|---|
An array of objects [{...}, {...}] | One row per object, one column per key |
An object with lists inside {"orders": [...], "customers": [...]} | One sheet per list, named after its key |
Nested object {"customer": {"name": "Aung"}} | A column customer.name (or the object as JSON text) |
List of values ["tea", "rice"] | One cell: tea, rice |
| Numbers, true/false | Real numbers and TRUE/FALSE you can sum and filter |
ISO dates "2026-10-24" | Real Excel dates you can sort and format |
| Keys missing from some items | Empty cells |
Why .xlsx instead of CSV?
A CSV is plain text: Excel guesses the types when you open it, drops leading zeros, can garble accents and Thai text, and only holds one sheet. An .xlsx file keeps numbers as numbers, text as text, dates as dates, and can hold several sheets. If you do need CSV, use JSON to CSV.
What happens to your data
The file is read and written by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded, there's no size limit beyond your device's memory, and it works offline once the page has loaded. The converter reads and writes modern Excel files (.xlsx, Excel 2007 and later), which Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice also open. Old .xls files need to be saved as .xlsx first.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a size limit?
Only your device's memory. Tens of thousands of rows convert in a second or two. Excel itself allows up to 1,048,576 rows per sheet.
My JSON is an API response with the data inside a key. Will it work?
Yes. Lists of objects inside the top-level object are found automatically, and each becomes a sheet. Turn off Each list on its own sheet to export only the first list.
My JSON won't parse.
Fix it with JSON Repair, then come back. Or use Send to… from any JSON tool.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The workbook is created in your browser.
