How Morse code timing works
Morse is built from one unit of time. A dot (dit) lasts 1 unit and a dash (dah) 3 units. The gap inside a letter is 1 unit, between letters 3 units, and between words 7 units. At 20 words per minute, one unit is 60 milliseconds.
SOS and other famous signals
- SOS is
... --- ..., sent as one unbroken signal. It was chosen because it's easy to send and hard to mistake, not because it stands for "save our souls". - I love you is
.. / .-.. --- ...- . / -.-- --- ..-. - Radio operators still use Morse for short signals like
CQ(calling anyone) and73(best regards).
Learning Morse
Learn letters by their sound, not by counting dots and dashes. The Koch method starts at full speed with just two letters and adds one at a time. Set the speed to 20 WPM, play a few words, and try writing them down before you look.
