How to use the Binary Translator
- Choose Encode for text to binary, or Decode for binary to text.
- Type or paste on the left. The result appears on the right as you type.
- Binary can be split into bytes with spaces (
01001000 01101001) or written as one long run of digits. - Click Copy, or ⇅ Use as input to translate it back.
How text becomes binary
Every character has a number. In ASCII, capital H is 72 and i is 105. Written in base 2 with 8 digits each, they become one byte apiece:
H → 72 → 01001000 i → 105 → 01101001
So Hi in binary is 01001000 01101001. To go back, split the binary into groups of 8, turn each group into a number, and look up its character. See the ASCII table for every code.
Emoji and other languages
Characters outside English, like é, ก or 😀, need more than one byte. This translator uses UTF-8, the encoding used by the web, so é becomes 2 bytes, Thai letters 3, and most emoji 4. That's why the byte count can be higher than the number of characters.

Frequently asked questions
What is 'hello' in binary?
01101000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111: one byte for each letter.
Why are there 8 digits for each letter?
Computers store text in bytes, and a byte is 8 bits. Small codes are padded with leading zeros so every byte has the same length.
Can I decode binary without spaces?
Yes. A continuous run of 0s and 1s is split into groups of 8 automatically, as long as the total length is a multiple of 8.
Is this the same as a number converter?
No. This translates text. To convert a number such as 45 to binary, use the decimal to binary converter.
