How text becomes hex

Each character is stored as one or more bytes in UTF-8, and every byte is written as two hex digits (00 to FF). Hi โ†’ H = 72 = 48, i = 105 = 69, so "Hi" is 48 69.

Where hex text shows up

  • URLs: percent-encoding is hex with a % sign. A space is %20 and รฉ is %C3%A9. Use the URL encoder for that.
  • Code: escapes like Hi in C, Python and JavaScript strings.
  • Debugging: hex dumps of files and network packets show text this way, which makes hidden characters easy to spot.
